This first LaunchPad features the work of Sheffield graduate designer Daniel Schofield. His work can be currently seen in the MADE NORTH Designer Showcase. Daniel recently graduated from Sheffield Hallam University studying Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons). He has formed Daniel Schofield Studio, which designs and makes furniture and lighting for the domestic and contract markets.
Based in Sheffield, Daniel Schofield Studio drawers on the areas industrial heritage and capabilities to influence and inform our designs. He says “We try to keep all manufacture as local as possible, which in Yorkshire – isn’t very far! This helps on a number of economical and ecological fronts, helping reduce carbon emissions in transport and feeding work and money back into the local economy.”
An ethical approach to design with a combination of craft, knowledge and community, help Daniel Schofield Studio create products that we hope will be in use for generations to come. ”Each piece is designed to stand the test of time through well thought out design, quality of manufacture and an individual charm.”
The Shifty desk / hallway stand is designed as part of the secrecy range of furniture I produced. Unsuspecting people presume that the storage compartment is the draw on the front. What they don’t know is that by pulling the FSC Ash work surface, the whole top slides open revealing the hidden storage area, perfect for personal papers and electronic equipment. By doubling in it’s size and having the work area come towards the user, the desk also lends itself perfectly to small space living.
50 years ago when someone bought a piece of furniture, they bought it to last them 50 years. Furniture prices becoming cheaper, coupled with today’s throw – away society can mean a piece may not even last 5 years.
Our Kid is designed for people to build an emotional connection with, resulting in them keeping it for longer, therefore reducing it’s environmental impact on landfill. FSC Oak and Powder coated mild steel
Coat Eggs are a fun take on the traditional coat peg. Annoyed by my coats being left with a point indented in them by sharp metal coat hooks, I looked to find a nice way to round off the shape to stop this happening.
Made from solid Beech, available in boxes of half dozen and designed and laid in Yorkshire.
What a Corker!
What a corker was conceived to stand the test of time by incorporating high quality materials through precise manufacturing.
The design draws on Yorkshires industrial capabilities to influence the process of the final product.
By fusing soft and pliable cork with hard and brittle mirror created using flat bed CNC router technology, the shape and hanging method add to the sensation of fragility in a contemporary and eco friendly composition.
Available in two sizes
Large – 500mm x 600mm
Small – 300mm x 360mm
Frame – Matte lacquered Cork
Peg – FSC Ash and matte lacquer
The Department Table has been designed to offer different areas for the various objects found on coffee and side tables.
By identifying what objects people tend to use in conjunction with these pieces, I was able to accommodate for them through three turned surfaces, each offering subtle differences to adapt to the objects placed on them.
This in turn keeps the space less cluttered and more accessible for people to interact with
Made from FSC Ash with a matte lacquer finish and manufactured in Yorkshire.
